The purpose of this class within the organization is to assist and provided advanced skill work in the operation of the Water Treatment Plant.
Work Schedule:
12 HOUR SHIFTS from 6:
00 PM to 6:
00 AM.
Follows a schedule rotation of seven (7) days on; followed by seven (7) days off.
Minimum Education and
Experience:
Requires an Associate's Degree or the equivalent of two years of college with studies in hard science, such as engineering, chemistry, geology, biology, mathematics or physics.
Requires four years in water plant operation or closely related experience.
In addition to applicants with an operational background, candidates with a strong mechanical/maintenance background will also be considered.
A minimum of a D level certificate in water treatment is required.
A valid driver's license is required.
The equivalent combination of licensure, training and related work experience may be considered.
Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the operation, maintenance, inspection, repair, and installation of water treatment plant components.
Knowledge of the mechanical and chemical processes involved in the operation of a water treatment plant.
Knowledge of the occupational hazards in water treatment plants and safety measures to be implemented.
Knows skills, procedures, codes, regulations, etc.
needed to complete job tasks.
Skilled in ensuring work is organized and well-planned; writing is legible; measurements and calculations are correct.
Ability to work with chemicals using normal protective equipment.
Ability to plan and direct the work of other employees.
Ability to operate and maintain equipment used in water treatment process.
Ability to recognize equipment and process problems.
Ability to recognize needed repairs.
Ability to perform, analyze, and interpret laboratory tests for the purpose of making operational adjustments.
Ability to deal effectively with people at all levels.
Ability to read and interpret engineering specifications and drawings pertaining to plant expansions and improvements.
Ability to work in a wide variety of weather conditions and exposure to the elements.
Ability to lift and move heavy objects (100 lbs.
) short distances (100 feet or less).
Ability to support 50 lbs.
overhead.
Ability to work in small, cramped spaces and comply with confined space entry procedures.
Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.
Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergency situations or tight deadlines.
Ability to maintain positive customer-focused relationships with co-workers, supervisors, agencies, the general public, and all other internal and external customers.
Personally demonstrates appropriate customer service skills.
Work is performed onsite.
The incumbent must be present at work to perform the essential functions of this job.
Essential Job Functions:
Reviews work of others for completeness and accuracy; evaluates and makes recommendations as appropriate; offers advice and assistance.
Assists Plant Superintendent in ensuring safe drinking water supply for customers along with enough water supply for proper fire protection throughout the City.
Ensures compliance with division's policies and procedures, standards of quality and safety, and all applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
Assists in ensuring all treatment at the plant is in accordance with all EPA and SCDHEC regulations with no violations.
Attends all required training and acquires CEUs to maintain Water Treatment Operator License.
Follows correct procedures and makes good decisions.
Make adjustments to the chemical or flow through the plant based on test results.
Develops and implements process control program to guide direction of the plant and makes sound operational decisions.
Responds to emergency facility/field situations as required.
Guides and assists others during emergency situations.
Troubleshoots the plant when there is an operational issue and gives guidance on corrective action to return plant back to normal operations.
Works as a liaison between Preventive Maintenance Contractors and shift operator to ensure no disruption to plant operations.
Assists in the optimization of treatment of raw water in accordance with AWOP criteria.
Performs generator efficiency tests to ensure equipment is working properly.
Assists in the collection and analysis of DBP samples weekly and maintains DBP analyzers to ensure they are performing properly.
Participates in meetings with consultants, contractors, representatives from local and state regulatory agencies as required.
This includes participation in regulatory inspections at the plant.
Performs all other duties as may be assigned to meet organizational needs.
